Hardware Design Review guidelines

(before PDR)

Definition

TThe objectives of the Design Review for Hardware held before the project PDR are as follows:

  1. Review and validate the detailed definition of the H/W (boards + mechanical) from technical standpoint
  2. Ensure that the detailed definition of H/W meets all project requirements (incl. Marketing, Service, Manufacturing and Material)
  3. Clearly identify the risks related to H/W and possible contingencies
  4. Review status of ASICs and S/W work to ensure good co-ordination with H/W
  5. Perform last sanity check on refined plans (schedule and resources) for H/W detailed design work to be conducted during Detailed Design Stage

Questions

Technical assessment

  • Does the detailed definition of H/W meet the product specifications?
  • Are the technical options/methods proposed for H/W appropriate for the project (architecture + implementation plans)?
  • Is the choice of components (technology, type, characteristics, cost, availability) appropriate?
  • Have the key risks related to H/W been correctly identified and evaluated?
  • Are there any risks for H/W due to the status of ASICs definition?
  • Are there any risks for H/W due to the status of S/W definition?
  • What contingencies can we propose against those risks (eg type of simulations, # of revisions, schedule)?
  • Are the R&D test programs for H/W (Unit, Integration) appropriate?
  • What are the open issues which need to be addressed regarding H/W?

Cross-functional check

  • Does the H/W definition support the Marketing requirements?
  • Does the H/W definition support the Serviceability requirements?
  • Does the H/W definition support the Manufacturing requirements?
  • Does the H/W definition support the Manufacturing Test requirements?
  • Are there any BOM issues from the commodity/components engineers standpoint?
  • Have the Quality Control issues been addressed?

H/W schedule and resources

  • Is the proposed schedule for H/W detailed design work appropriate?
  • Are the corresponding resources appropriate (# of people, type of skills)?
  • From a H/W standpoint, are we ready to proceed to the Detailed Design stage?
