PDR

(Preliminary Design Review)

Definition

The project Preliminary Design Review (PDR) is the formal Design Review held at the end of the Detailed Definition Stage.

The objectives of PDR are as follows:

  1. Formally validate the product high-level design
  2. Formally approve detailed design work plans for the Detailed Design Stage
  3. Check whether the project is still within the contract margins
In order to achieve an effective PDR, the project team should hold a series of Design Reviews (for ASICs, H/W and S/W as appropriate) prior to PDR. The goals of those DRs is to review and validate detailed aspects of the high-level design work and to summarize key decisions and open issues (see following pages for details).

At PDR, the PMT should demonstrate its readiness to move to the Detailed Design Stage. In a concise presentation, the PMT should outline the following:

  • Summary of all key technical decisions already reviewed and approved during previous DRs
  • Open issues to be resolved in order to move to the Detailed Design Stage and recommendations on how to resolve them
  • Demonstration that key requirements from all functions have been taken into account in the high-level design
  • Proposed work plan and resources to proceed to the Detailed Definition Stage

Questions

Technical assessment

  • Have the product specifications changed since HDR?
  • Does the product high-level design (ASICs, H/W, S/W) fully meets the agreed functional and technical specifications?
  • Is the product high-level design optimized from technical standpoint?

Cross-functional check

  • Does the product high-level design support the Serviceability requirements (DF Serviceability performed)?
  • Does the product high-level design support the Manufacturing requirements (DFM performed)?
  • Does the product high-level design support the Manufacturing Test requirements (DFT performed)?
  • Are there any issues related to the current BOM from the sourcing standpoint?
  • Does the current high-level design still support the cost objectives for the product / solution?

Readiness for Detailed Design Stage

  • Are there outstanding issues preventing us from moving forward to the detailed design Stage?
  • Are resources and equipment proposed for the Detailed Design Stage appropriate?
  • Are they available?
  • Are work plans for the Detailed Design Stage acceptable?
  • Is the project still within the margins of the contract (Project Objectives page)
